01 / THE ROLE
From a difficult question to working software.
Jakub brings software engineering and artificial intelligence experience to Denting the Universe. He works on turning complex requirements into useful digital experiences, with an interest in how intelligent tools can support the people doing the work.
His background spans professional software development, university engineering teams and independent research. That combination brings both practical product experience and a willingness to examine problems from a new angle.
02 / ENGINEERING & COLLABORATION
Building systems with a wider view.
Jakub has worked in software engineering at VantEdge, where the broader product environment includes logistics, terminal operations and regulatory compliance. He also served as software lead for the University of Toronto Aerospace Team, bringing a software perspective to a multidisciplinary engineering setting.
Working across different contexts calls for clear communication as well as technical problem-solving: understanding how a software component fits into a larger system and how the people involved will use it.
03 / RESEARCH & AI
Exploring how intelligent agents make decisions.
For the 2021 Canada-Wide Science Fair, Jakub explored a challenging question in artificial intelligence: how agents can negotiate when each has information the other does not. His project, Artificially Intelligent Agents for Bargaining with Private Information, received a senior bronze award.
His research explored bargaining strategies using deep reinforcement learning. Alongside his involvement with the University of Toronto’s Machine Intelligence Student Team and Ethical Principles in AI Club, it reflects an interest in both the capabilities of AI and the questions raised by its use.
04 / COMMUNICATING COMPLEXITY
Making ideas easier to see.
Jakub has also contributed to visual representations for educational research. A University of Calgary research poster on conceptual understanding in quantum physics acknowledges his assistance with its visuals—an example of the ways technical and visual thinking can help communicate complex ideas.
